PEOPLE OF THE NAME

God has had his people, in the most daring times of general idolatry.  It is very important for The Lord God the way He presets Himself to us!

We want our children to know who we are,  and that they will represent us correctly, because they understand  every thing about us, So we reveal ourselves to them,  not only in what we do for them, but when they understand we tell them our names, and all that we have done in life.   This really makes them love us more for they come to see  us as we are and  they are able to perceive also how much we love them.
It is the same with our God,  He wants us to know Him,   He is the best to describe Himself to us, and He starts with His Name, and we fall in love with our God, when we really know Him,  and want to belong to Him and take His Name on Us.
It is then of the most importance to understand the Way The Lord reveals Himself to us!

People of the name in N.T.

God at first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for His Name (Acts 15:14).
The Name of Jesus identifies us to the world, to fellow believers, and to ourselves.
God’s people have always been identified by His Name.

PEOPLE OF THE NAME IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

In the Old Testament God established a covenant with the nation of Israel.
If They would serve Him, He promised to establish them, make them a holy people, bless them greatly, and make them a witness of Him to all nations, and He expressed this plan by identifying them with His Name Jehovah.

(In the King James Version and New King James Version, LORD, in large and small capitals, stands for the Name Yahweh.)

PEOPLE OF THE NAME IN Deuteronomy 28:8-10

“The Lord will command the blessing on you in your storehouses and in all to which you set your hand, and He will bless you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
“The Lord will establish you as a holy people to Himself, just as He has sworn to you, if you keep the commandments of the Lord your God and walk in His ways.
10 Then all peoples of the earth shall see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they shall be afraid of you.
Throughout the Old Testament, God identified his people as those who were called by His Name:

CALLED BY THE NAME

 2 Chronicles 7:14

14 if My people who are called by My Name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

CALLED BY THE NAME

Isaiah 43:5-7

Fear not, for I am with you;
I will bring your descendants from the east,
And gather you from the west;
I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’
And to the south, ‘Do not keep them back!’
Bring My sons from afar,
And My daughters from the ends of the earth—
Everyone who is called by My Name, Whom I have created for My glory; I have formed him, yes, I have made him.”

CALLED BY THE NAME

Daniel 9:19

19 O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and act! Do not delay for Your own sake, my God, for Your city and Your people are called by Your name.”
God’s Name represents His character, power, authority, and presence –

PEOPLE OF THE NAME O.T.

Exodus 3:13-14

13 Then Moses said to God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?”
14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

PEOPLE OF THE NAME O.T

Exodus 6:3-8

I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by My Name Lord I was not known to them.I have also established My covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land of their pilgrimage, in which they were strangers. And I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel whom the Egyptians keep in bondage, and I have remembered My covenant. Therefore say to the children of Israel: ‘I am the Lord; I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, I will rescue you from their bondage, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. And I will bring you into the land which I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; and I will give it to you as a heritage: I am the Lord.’”

PEOPLE OF THE NAME OF THE OLD TESTAMENT

Exodus 9:16

16 But indeed for this purpose I have raised you up, that I may show My power in you, and that My Name may be declared in all the earth.

THE ANGEL AND THE PROMISES: Exodus 23:20-21
20 “Behold, I send an Angel before you to keep you in the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared.21 Beware of Him and obey His voice; do not provoke Him, for He will not pardon your transgressions; for My name is in Him.

PEOPLE OF THE NAME

1 Kings 8:27-29

27 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built!
28 Yet regard the prayer of Your servant and his supplication, O Lord my God, and listen to the cry and the prayer which Your servant is praying before You today:
29 that Your eyes may be open toward this temple night and day, toward the place of which You said, ‘My Name shall be there,’ that You may hear the prayer which Your servant makes toward this place.
To be called by His Name means to be identified with Him, to know His divine character, to experience His miraculous power, to live under His sovereign authority, and to Dwell in His sacred presence.
God’s Name represents God Himself; it is God in self-revelation. Thus God’s people exalt His name:

PEOPLE OF THE NAME O.T
Psalm 34:3
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
And let us exalt His Name together.
God’s people praise and bless His name: Psalm 113:1-3
“Praise, O servants of the Lord,
Praise the Name of the
Lord!
Blessed be the Name of the Lord
From this time forth and forevermore!
From the rising of the sun to its going down The Lord’s Name is to be praised.
God’s people seek His Name and call upon His name:

PEOPLE OF THE NAME

Psalm 83:16

16 Fill their faces with shame,
That They may seek Your Name,
 PEOPLE OF THE NAME O.T.
 Psalm 105:1
Oh, give thanks to the Lord!
Call upon His name;
Make known His deeds among the peoples!
God’s people sanctify His name, treating it as holy, revered, and sacred by the way They use it and also by the way They live:

GOD’S PROMISE

Isaiah 29:22-23

22 Therefore thus says the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob:
“Jacob shall not now be ashamed,
Nor shall his face now grow pale;
23 But when he sees his children,
The work of My hands, in his midst, They will hallow My name,
And hallow the Holy One of Jacob,
And reverence God of Israel.

By word and deed They declare His Name to each other and to the world:
PEOPLE OF THE NAME
 Psalm 22:22
22 I will declare Your Name to My brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.

THEY ARE Those who honor, (respect, revere) God’s Name and love God’s Name will have a great inheritance:

PEOPLE OF THE NAME O.T.

Psalm 61:5

For You, O God, have heard my vows; You have given me the heritage of those who reverence Your name.

GOD´S PROMISE TO HIS PEOPLE Psalm 69:36

36 Also, the descendants of His servants shall inherit it,
And those who love His Name shall dwell in it.

Those who remember His Name have an unfailing source of strength and protection:

PEOPLE OF THE NAME O.T.

Psalm 20:7

Some trust in chariots, and some in horses;
But They will remember the Name of the Lord their God.

PEOPLE OF THE NAME O.T. Proverbs 18:10

10 The Name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe.

God reserves blessings for those who think on His name:

GOD’S PROMISE OLD TESTAMENT

Malachi 3:16

16 Then those who honored the Lord spoke to one another,
And the Lord listened and heard them; So a book of remembrance was written before Him for those who honor the Lord and who meditate on His name.

The faith, commitment, and holiness of God’s true people in the Old Testament can be summed up in the words of Micah 4:5: “We will walk in the Name of the LORD our God for ever and ever.”

GOD’S NAME IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

The new Testament church continued to exalt God’s name, the only difference being that They had a greater revelation of God and His name.
The God of the Old Testament—Jehovah—had manifested Himself in flesh to be the Savior, and the Name by which He chose to come was Jesus, which literally means Jehovah-Savior: Matthew 1:21,23
21 And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His Name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”
23 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and They shall call His Name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
Thus the Name of Jesus is the only saving name: Acts 4:12
12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other Name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Jesus, the highest Name ever made know: Philippians 2:9

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the Name which is above every name,
Jesus, the Name by which the New Testament church is identified.

God united both Jews and Gentiles into His church, thereby establishing a people of the Name of Jesus: Acts 15:14

14 Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name.
New Testament believers have the Name of Jesus invoked over them:

Acts 15:17

17 So that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name, Says the Lord who does all these things.

Believers are called by His name

James 2:7

Do they not blaspheme that noble Name by which you are called?
Jesus instructed His disciples to gather in His name:

Matthew 18:20

20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”
To pray in His name:

John 14:13-14

13 And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.
And to preach in His name:

Luke 24:47

47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His Name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

He said They would cast out demons, receive divine protection, and receiving healings in His name:

Do miracles in His name

Mark 16:17-18

17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues;

18 they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

As well as receive the Holy Spirit in His name: John 14:26

26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

He also warned that They would be reviled persecuted, and hated for His name’s sake:

Matthew 5:11

11 “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.

Matthew 10:22

22 And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved.
After the New Testament church was founded on the Day of Pentecost, the believers went forth in the Name of Jesus.

Baptized by invoking the Name of Jesus: Acts 2:38

38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Those baptized in Samaria

Acts 8:16

16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus.

Baptized in the name of Jesus

Acts 10:48

48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the Name of the Lord. Then They asked him to stay a few days.

Baptized in the name of Jesus

Acts 19:5

When They heard this, they were baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus.

Baptized in the name of Jesus

Acts 22:16

16 And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the Name of the Lord.’

They prayed for the sick and received healings by invoking the Name of Jesus:

Acts 3:6

Then Peter said, “Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.”

Faith in the name of Jesus

Acts 3:16

16 And His Name, through faith in His name, has made this man strong, whom you see and know. Yes, the faith which comes through Him has given him this perfect soundness in the presence of you all.

By the name of Jesus

Acts 4:10

10 let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.

Pray in His name for the sick

James 5:14

14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the Name of the Lord.

They cast out demons by invoking the Name of Jesus: Acts 16:18

18 And this she did for many days.
But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the Name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour.

They taught and preached everywhere in His name: Acts 5:28

28 saying, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this Name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us!”

Taught and preached in the name of Jesus

Acts 5:40, 42

40 And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the Name of Jesus, and let them go.

42 And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.

They called on Jesus Name: Acts 9:21

21 Then all who heard were amazed, and said, “Is this not he who destroyed those who called on this Name in Jerusalem, and has come here for that purpose, so that he might bring them bound to the chief priests?”
Labored for Jesus Name:

Revelation 2:3

and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My Name’s sake and have not become weary.

Held fast to Jesus Name:

Revelation 2:13

13 “I know your works, and where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. And you hold fast to My name, and did not deny My faith even in the days in which Antipas was My faithful martyr, who was killed among you, where Satan dwells.
And refused to deny His Name:

Revelation 3:8

“I know your works. See, I have set before you an open door, and no one can shut it; for you have a little strength, have kept My word, and have not denied My Name.

In fact, They proclaimed that salvation was only in the Name of Jesus: Acts 4:12

12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other Name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

They lived a holy life in order to bear witness of His name:

2 Timothy 2:19

19 Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the Name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

They bore His Name to the world, and They suffered for His name: Acts 9:15-16

15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My Name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. 16 For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My Name’s sake.”

They were reproached for His name: 1 Peter 4:14

14 If you are reproached for the Name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.

And They even risked their lives for His Name: Acts 15:26

26 men who have risked their lives for the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

When persecuted, they rejoiced “that They were counted worthy to suffer shame for His Name”: Acts 5:41

41 So They departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that They were counted worthy to suffer shame for His Name.
(Slide) They did not enjoy beatings, imprisonment, deprivation, and martyrdom any more than we do, but They rejoiced that even their enemies identified them with Jesus.

CONCLUSION

To be the people of the Name of God means to enjoy the blessings of God, including the greatest blessings of all, salvation.

It means we are to worship God with all our being, to walk in holiness as people wo are dedicated wholly to Him, and to be a witness of Him to the rest of the world. In short, the Name is our identification.

It is our supreme privilege to be identified with the only saving name, the highest Name ever given, the Name of Jesus.

One day everyone will confess that name: Philippians 2:9-11

Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the Name which is above every name,
10 that at the Name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth,
11 and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Those who confess the Name of Jesus now do so for salvation: Romans 10:9-13

that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11 For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him.
13 For “whoever calls on the Name of the Lord shall be saved.”
Those who wait until later will confess that Name in judgment.

Let us confess the Name of Jesus now for salvation, by repenting in the Name of Jesus, being baptized in the Name of Jesus, and receiving the Holy Spirit in the Name of Jesus:

Luke 24:47

47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His Name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

Be baptized in the name of Jesus

Acts 2:38

38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit will bring to remembrance

John 14:26

26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
And from that time forward, let us walk and live in His name, exalting the Name of Jesus in our worship, our lifestyle, and our witness.

Do all in the name of Jesus

Colossians 3:17

17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the Name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.
